Unique Ways To Save For A Family Vacation

Some people, no matter what happens, purpose to take a family vacation every year. This is more like an extremely enjoyable habit for them. However, let's face it. This doesn't seem like a feasible option to many people. That's because they see yearly trips as something only possible for the rich and famous. However, this is not true. Most everyone can enjoy this type of yearly activity. All they have to do is purpose to save and be creative when it comes to the places they choose to visit.

For instance, although many people dream of going to Disney World, this is just not possible for some. That's because it can be very expensive. However, this doesn't mean that someone can't plan an enjoyable family vacation. If someone does the right amount of research they could find a number of less expensive theme parks all over the country. Although some children may express a small bit of disappointment beforehand, it will most likely be dissipated once they actually enter the park. They will see that the popular places aren't the only ones that provide enjoyment.

Other than trying to find cheaper choices for a family vacation, families can also think of creative ways to save money. For instance, they could cut back on their eating expenses. Eating out can really add up, especially over a year's time. Just think about it. If a husband and wife have two children and they eat out at a fast food restaurant once a week, they can easily spend 20 dollars, if not more. Spending 20 dollars 4 times per month for an entire year is about 960 dollars. That's almost 1,000 dollars. This same money could have been used to go towards a nice trip.

Another thing that a household can cut back on is their electricity bill. One easy way to do this is to unplug appliances that are not being used. This should especially be done when no one will be at home. Lamps, cell phone chargers and even televisions are still generating heat, even if they are off. Therefore, in order to save in this area, it is best to just unplug it. The average electric bill is around 100 dollars per month.

Unplugging appliances that aren't being used can save up to 15 percent on this particular bill. So, this is about 15 dollars a month or 180 dollars a year. This may not seem like a lot, but this can easily cover 2 nights in a reputable hotel.

So, going on a family vacation is something most people can do. It's not just an option for those who are considered wealthy. All it takes is a little extra effort.

Overnighting in New York City on a Budget

Economy Hotels in Brooklyn

Two years ago, the hotels near Times Square website had a list of fifteen 'economy hotels' in midtown Manhattan that charged less than $200 per night. Currently, the list has been reduced to only seven and these are listed at between $200 and $275 per night (plus taxes and fees, of course). Okay, we know prices for almost everything are escalating. But I forgot about Brooklyn. Hotels-near-Times-Square.com now lists a few Brooklyn hotels in addition to their regular midtown Manhattan listings. Okay, they're not 'near' Times Square but for the price wouldn't you rather spend a few minutes on the subway?

We travel using our fifth wheel RV for trips. We usually have four people and just the lodging costs alone easily tilt the decision in favor of the RV. We stay in the RV park in Jersey City, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, and take the ferry -- a very enjoyable and scenic trip. Hotel prices in midtown Manhattan have always been out of reach but this information about some nice but economical hotels in Brooklyn, just a brief subway ride from midtown Manhattan, could change things for a lot of people.

Brooklyn just Minutes from Midtown Manhattan

New York City has the best subway system on the planet. It may not be the cleanest or the quietest but it has what you really want it for; get there in a hurry with the least amount of effort. I have learned about four hotels in Brooklyn that are just a few minutes, by subway, from Times Square. Two of them charge $150 or less and the third charges $180 while the fourth charges $220. These are small, comfortable hotels, each with its unique decor, and each just a very short walk from a subway station. Plus, if you are driving, each of them is near an I-278 exit (to get to I-278 see directions below).

Parking a Major Consideration

There are many other hotels across the East River from Manhattan (Astoria, Brooklyn, East Elmhurst, Flushing, Jamaica, Queens & Whitestone) but minimum room rates (except for 2 or 3 of them) are over $250; most are well over $300. You can get much more convenient rooms in midtown Manhattan for about the same price. The main advantage of the hotels across the East River from Manhattan, other than price for a few, is parking. Frequently, parking is free; those that aren't free charge only $10 to $15 per night. While I still prefer taking an RV and parking in Jersey City (for about $60 per night), you can still save some money taking your car.

Restaurants and Tourist Attractions in Brooklyn

Brooklyn has many other advantages over midtown Manhattan. Restaurants cost significantly less and the food is at least as good. Brooklyn is world famous for its Jewish delicatessens and there are many of them from which to pick. Also, many of the attractions you would wish to visit are in Brooklyn.

Arriving by Train or Bus

If you are traveling by train (usually Amtrak or the Long Island Railroad) you will be deposited at a subway station. The same is true if you are arriving by bus at the Port Authority. All have easy, quick access to Times Square and midtown Manhattan. To reach one of the 'economy' hotels in Brooklyn, you will find routing directions at Hotels-near-Times-Square.com on the Brooklyn Economy Hotels page. And, from your hotel you can get on the Internet and pull up the interactive routing map at http://www.brail.org/transit/nyc.html. They have made it very simple; you enter your departure location, then your destination location and they will present the routing. They even will show routing by express trains where possible! Note: The official MTA subway map gives much more complete information but is not interactive. It is in.pdf format so you can enlarge it to your comfort zone. I prefer this map to the one at brail.org because it allows me to make my own routing decisions (e.g., I frequently want to stop at a series of locations and, with small children, I need to minimize the walking).

Arriving by Car

If you are driving your car to New York City, you will need to get on I-278 to get to Brooklyn. I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike) intersects with I-278 at exit 13 which is almost the beginning of I-278. You head east to cross Staten Island and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge to Brooklyn. For those coming from the north, all your southbound controlled access highways cross I-95 as it wends its way from the George Washington Bridge to the Long Island Sound (where it, also, heads north into New England). If you encounter I-95 at an exit number higher than 6, go south to I-278 (which is exit 6-B -- a left lane exit). The Bronx River Parkway directly intersects with I-278. The other southbound freeways intersect with I-95 in which case you head north on 95 to exit 4-A and I-895 which is a shortcut to I-278.

In NYC, Public Transportation beats Driving

You can get almost anywhere in New York City by subway and connecting busses. Believe me, you do NOT want to drive your car around the city. Leave it safely parked at your hotel so you can enjoy your trip home.

Explore a Buddhist Tour in India

For Buddhists, India is a sacred place even though the country is not essentially a Buddhist country. The reason behind India being sacred is that Lord Gauttam Buddha was born in India, in the city of Lumbini. Not only that, Gautam Buddha attained enlightened at a place near Gaya. The place is called Bodhgaya after "enlightenment".

Other than this, Lord Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon to his five disciples in a place near Varanasi. The place is called Sarnath and is easily reachable from Varanasi - via air, road and rail. Lord Buddha attained nirvana in Kushinagar, in India.

Thus there are four must visit places for Buddhist tourists:
• Lumbini
• Bodhgaya
• Sarnath
• Kushinagar

Other than the above mentioned four places, there are caves and monasteries all over India that contain teachings of Buddha. Ajanta caves, for example, contain carvings and paintings that cover Jataka tales related to Buddhism.

A Buddhist Pilgrimage tour should essentially cover the above mentioned places. The Buddhist temple tour would mean visiting not only the temples at Sarnath, Lumnini and Bodhgaya but also the paintings at Ajanta caves as it is also a Buddhist Place in India.

Lumbini is a world heritage place as people believe visiting the place is the beginning of their quest for salvation. The palace where Buddha stayed until the age of 29 is protected and preserved as are the other places of Buddhist interest - including the pond where Buddha's mother took a dip before lord Buddha was born.

Bodhgaya is a place near Gaya which again is reachable via Patna, the capital of Bihar. Patna is reachable via rail, road and air. While Gaya stands as an important place for Hindus, Bodhgaya is venerable for Buddhists. Lord Buddha gained knowledge here in one of the monasteries. The place has monasteries and paintings that reveal the life and study of Lord Buddha.

Sarnath was the place where Lord Buddha shared his knowledge with his first five disciples who actually were looking for knowledge with Buddha at Bodhgaya. As Buddha did not have money to pay for crossing the river Ganges, he walked on the water to reach Sarnath. When the king of Varanasi came to know of this enlightened person, he gifted an entire deer park and adjoining place to him - for purpose of further strengthening the studies etc. At Sarnath, you can also find a huge statue of Buddha. In addition, there is a museum.

Ajanta caves are located in the state of Maharashtra. They are total four caves out of which three contain paintings and sculptures that reveal and spread the stories from what are known as Jataka tales. It is believed by some that Lord Buddha was not the only avatar. There were several instances of Boddhisatvas on this planet. The Jataka tales tell stories of other Boddisatvas too. Even if you are not a Buddhist, you should visit the Ajanta caves just to check out the enchanting paintings and sculpture.

Your tour operator will give you more details on Buddhist Pilgrimage tour - places you will visit, schedule etc. Make sure you know things in advance so that you can pray and enjoy the peace while learning new things.

Getting the Most From a Road Trip Vacation

Going on vacation can be an expensive proposition, especially if it involves family travel. Costs can add up quickly. Fuel prices are at or near highs and hotel accommodations during the peak travel season can eat into a travel budget significantly. One travel expense that everybody can control is the cost of entertainment. By entertainment I'm referring to the things you want to see and do during a road trip vacation.

I write a travel blog which centers around historically interesting sites found in the western United States. One simple truth is that to have fun and learn at the same time, you don't need to spend a kings ransom. There are many terrific historic travel sites in the western U.S. that cost very little or even nothing to enjoy and one of the best things about these venues are that they are perfect for family travel. In other words, they appeal to the entire family.

Waco Texas

I can suggest examples in just about every state in the western U.S., and I'll begin with Texas. On a convenience standpoint, Texas is an easy state to travel in. Interstates are quite abundant in every direction and for the most part they are toll free. Heading south out of the Dallas/Fort Worth area on Interstate 35, you'll come across Waco Texas. Waco is about half way between Dallas and Austin. Waco happens to be the home of the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame and Museum. In fact, the museum is directly off Interstate 35 on the east side of the Interstate. Current rates are from $6 to $7 for adults and children $3. Under six years of age are free. Here you'll find artifacts and documents that cover the entire history of the Texas Rangers and the state of Texas.

Austin Texas

Heading further down Interstate 35, you'll come to Austin Texas, the state capital. Two no cost yet quite interesting stops is the state capital building itself which has it's origin back to the 1800's and the establishment of the famed XIT Ranch in the Texas Panhandle. A few blocks south of the capital building is the famous Driskill Hotel. The Driskill Hotel's Victorian architectural style makes it stand out in the Austin downtown area. The Texas capital building was made possible by the selling of over 3 million acres of land in the Texas Panhandle to a syndicate that would become one of the largest cattle ranches in the world. The Driskill Hotel was built in the late 1870's and was at one time used as the state capital building while the actual capital building you see today was constructed. The exterior and interior of this hotel is magnificent and the paintings on display there are very unique to Texas. Both sites are free to explore.

San Antonio Texas

Take a drive further south on Interstate 35 and you'll reach San Antonio Texas, at one time the largest city in the state. If you haven't yet, make a stop at the famous Alamo which now resides in the center of the city's business district. The original Spanish mission was named Mission San Antonio de Valero. Like all old Spanish missions in North America, their main purpose was to convert the Native population to Christianity. Admission to the Alamo and surrounding grounds are free. A great place to take the family. Another very interesting and historically important site in san Antonio is the Pioneer Flour Mill which was started in the mid 1800's by an immigrant from Germany. The Guenther Home displays many period artifacts and provides a very popular bakery and restaurant. A visit to the Guenther Home and the beautiful grounds is free to the public. While in San Antonio, don't forget a stroll along the famous River Walk which is in the center of town and runs along the San Antonio River. The entire River Walk is a public park which is open 365 days a year. If your budget permits, an unforgettable boat ride along the River Walk costs only $7.75 per adult and $5 for children. Seniors over 60 and military $5. The ride is about 35 minutes long as is narrated.

Fort Stockton Texas

For those on an extended Texas vacation into west Texas, you'll find history unfolding at just about every stop. In southwest Texas directly off Interstate 10 is Fort Stockton. At one time, Fort Stockton was a busy military outpost. It was also the home at one time of the Ninth Cavalry of Buffalo Soldiers.Traffic on the trail between San Antonio and El Paso was quite important and the military outposts were in place to prevent attacks on stagecoaches and freight wagons by Apache and Comanche Indians. The Fort Stockton Museum is filled with authentic artifacts from the 1800's which include military uniforms, firearms, saddles, bugles and just about everything that was needed on the wild frontier. Military garrisons at Fort Stockton date back to 1858 with the establishment of Camp Stockton. The museum is located on the old fort grounds in Barracks #1 and includes a walking tour of the parade ground, original and reconstructed buildings. This is another excellent stop for the entire family. For current admission fees contact the Fort Stockton Museum at 915-336-2400. The fort is owned by the City of Stockton and is operated by the Fort Stockton Historical Society, a non-profit organization. Another tour stop in Fort Stockton is the world famous Annie Riggs Hotel. The Annie Riggs hotel is now a fascinating museum showcasing everything pioneer. Everything you see there is authentic and there's quite a lot to see. One of the exhibits is an iron bed ordered from Sears & Roebuck for $6.75. The Annie Riggs Museum is owned and operated by the Fort Stockton Historical Society. The museum is located at 301 S. Main St. Current admission fees are $3 for adults, 42 for children and $2.50 for seniors.

There's quite a few free or low cost fun and educational travel stops all over the United States. A road trip doesn't have to be a budget breaker. There are still plenty of things to do and see that should be able to fit most family travel budgets. Have a great vacation.

Take a Moment and Imagine What the Caribbean Means to You?

Caribbean

Take a moment and imagine what the Caribbean means to you?

Do you see calm, cobalt waters glittering beneath cloud-less skies? Do you look down and see your toes sinking into silky smooth sands? Perhaps you see straws poking out of fresh coconuts, spiky palm trees creasing in a light breeze and the toothy smiles of friendly townsfolk?

If this is your image, then be prepared for reality to fulfil fantasy with a truly unforgettable Caribbean holiday, where your senses will be stimulated and memories will be made. Don't just imagine the Caribbean, experience it!

In fact, the only arduous activity you will possibly 'endure' is choosing which Caribbean destination is best for you... Then again, as far as tasks go though, this is unlikely to test your patience!

Be assured, whichever destination you choose you are guaranteed to find ivory-tinged beaches being lapped by the warm waves of the Caribbean Sea, but each nation has its own identity to seduce and entice you beyond its pristine shores.

With its 3,000 hours of annual sunshine, Barbados is the ultimate choice for a sun-drenched holiday. Boasting more than 60 fabulous beaches across its stunning coastline, the likes of Carlisle Bay and Crane Beach to the south of the island stand out, though the verdant inland makes hiring a Mini-Moke for an awe-inspiring drive almost as necessary as sprawling out on the sands.

Spread across an incredible 700 islands and boasting the third largest coral reef in the world, the Bahamas remains remarkably undiscovered. The real-life setting for the Pirates of the Caribbean, Paradise Island, Cable Beach and Gold Rock Beach beckon you to relax on the sands, dive amidst the reef or swim with dolphins...

To experience the Caribbean with an added dose of Spanish flair, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Cuba are swiftly emerging as amongst the Caribbean's foremost attractions.

From the stunning sands of Punta Cana, to the natural beauty of the Samana Peninsula, to the vibrant capital city of Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic is the Caribbean with a distinctive - and addictively - lively atmosphere, while Cuba, with its renowned nightlife is certainly the pick for a party!

Mexico also knows how to put on a show, particularly on the stunning stretch of Cancun, the country's most popular destination. Distinguished by its Aztec heritage, lavish resorts and stunning sands, Cancun is considered one of the world's premier holiday choices.

Listen to the iconic reggae beats and tap your toes to its rhythms on a holiday to Jamaica, arguably the Caribbean's most cultural destination. With its fabulous laid-back attitude and calm approach to daily life, a stay in Jamaica can be an addictively relaxing Caribbean holiday destination choice. Take to Montego Bay to experience the very best that this distinctive nation has to offer.

Endowed with 365 beaches, Antigua is faithfully known as offering a beach a day, which means those not lucky enough to live on this paradise island has plenty of choice on which to spread out and de-stress.

Then again, paradise isn't difficult to find in the Caribbean, with Tobago and St. Kitts each offering the sun, sea and sand synonymous with the stunning region. In St. Kitts, colonial heritage is twinned with an attractive landscape for a wonderfully varied holiday opportunity, while Tobago is best described by its reputation as a Robinson Crusoe island...

Better known as the 'Isle of Spice', the verdant landscape of Grenada is possibly the Caribbean's best-kept secret. Located in the south-east corner of the Caribbean Sea, Grenada does a fabulous impression of an oasis, the quiet beaches and light breezes feeling a hundreds of miles away from anything else...

With its lush green inland, fringed by golden beaches and that remarkable ocean, St. Lucia has often been regarded as the archetypal Caribbean island. Indeed, whether you prefer to delve into the dramatic rainforest, or stretch out on the sands, St. Lucia is the epitome of what the Caribbean has to offer.

In fact, the Caribbean is such though that whichever destination you choose, you are destined to be impressed. Sublime weather, unforgettable scenery and the attractive opportunity to sit back and relax ensures Caribbean holidays really are a temptation worth giving in to.

When looking for fares online make sure you enter the correct number of passengers as some of these couple fares only appear when you indicate it's for two people.

WEB & MEMBERS ONLY DEALS. To clear remaining seats, airlines will often post domestic and international deals online as web-only fares. Quite often International Airlines will also advertise these fares cheap fares via newsletters to their pool of email subscribers. Sign up for these airline newsletters as they are often sent out to members before airlines advertise online. But take note that these fares will usually be seriously discounted and consequently be very restricted and non refundable.

WHOLESALERS. Larger quantities of tickets, including some business class fares from airlines at discounted bulk prices, so sometimes they are able to sell these fares at cheaper than even the airline's own websites!

TIMING IS CRUCIAL. Avoid traveling in peak season, but if you have to travel during peak holiday seasons - book in advance! Finding your best deals at peak holiday seasons is nearly impossible! Be prepared that travel in peak season is expensive, so getting any discounted Business Class Fares will be hard unless you book well in advance. Traveling in low season or peak periods is another good way to get some cheap business class airfares as airlines try to clear seats.

Tips on Creating Life-Long Backpacking Memories

The reasons for going on a backpacking trip will vary with each individual. Some will unfortunately just go to party and take pictures in front of famous landmarks. This article is for those who, hopefully, are going on a backpacking trip to experience different cultures.

Webster defines cultures as..."the integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations; the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group; also: the characteristic features of everyday existence (as diversions or a way of life) shared by people in a place or time."

Your backpacking trip will allow you to view Europe in a truly authentic way. You will have opportunities to view the culture of the areas you visit in a very personal way. You can truly see how people live in other parts of the world face to face. These tips are intended to get you to thinking about how you can get the maximum experience and create life-long memories while visiting a "foreign" country.

Tip #1: Keep An Open Mind

Just because you have your idea of what to expect from watching television or movies, don't believe that or the media. Keep an open mind and expect to have a positive experience wherever you go. A lot of people will have preconceived ideas of how people in a foreign country will act. Please do not do this. Just because people dress differently, talk differently, or do something that you would never do doesn't mean that it is wrong. For example, is it acceptable to put cream in your tea? You may not like your tea with cream, but many English people would not drink it any other way. That is just the way they have learned to drink tea in their culture. Take notes of things you notice that are different from what is normal for you. You will gather a nice collection of differences to share when you return.

Tip #2: Have Respect for the Local Language

Though English is referred to as the International Business language, not all people in the world speak English. It is so easy to let this be an annoyance, when it could so easily be a great experience in communication. On my first backpacking trip I took along some help. Fodor's.com is a great location to get some needed help before you begin your backpacking trip.

Being able to speak the language in a foreign country is a great way to connect with local culture.

Fodor's has partnered with the experts at Living Language to provide you with Language for Travelers. This fun, easy, and effective method for learning key phrases will help you prepare for your backpacking trip, whether you're reactivating a language you studied a long time ago or you're starting from scratch. Here's how to get started:

Listen and hear over 150 words and phrases from key categories.
Print out a free PDF of essential vocabulary to take on your trip.
Learn more about the language and culture of your destination.

This is a free service and the more you are able to learn, the more fun you will have communicating with people in different countries. You will also gain a great respect for the language and the culture of the countries you visit.

Tip #3: Be a People Watcher

Resting on a park bench is not only good as a break from walking, but it will give you an opportunity to watch the locals. Many times on our backpacking trips to Europe, we would play a game called "Tourist or Local". As different people would pass by we would watch until they were out of hearing range and then say either "tourist" or "local". Of course we would not go up to the person and actually ask them, but after a short time, we noticed it was easy to tell the locals from the tourists. Okay, I admit, if they wore a camera around their neck it was an instant give away. When in Vienna, you must visit "The Ring" which is the main street that goes around central Vienna. They have people dressed in 18th century attire handing out brochures for Mozart concerts. They are trained to only hand them to tourists. My son and I would leave our backpacks at the hostel and go to "The Ring" and try to walk toward the center of town without being handed a brochure. When we accomplished that, we felt that we were understanding a bit more about how people view other people. It was fun learning to "fit in".

Tip #4: Keep a Journal

Years after your backpacking trip to Europe, you will try to remember everything you did on the trip. For me, I do not have the best memory, so my journal of the individual trips is something I treasure. Keeping a journal can consume a lot of your time. It is hard to journal while walking, it is difficult to remember everything you did when you finally get some down time, but it is so worth the effort. You will be so very glad that you kept a journal. As you add entries into your journal it will give you time to reflect on the things done on that day.

My journals were a habit I developed over time. It is important to have a consistent time that you log in your journal each day. Most of my logging was done just before retiring at night. A lot was done on trains and in buses or subways. I did not have an iPad, just an "old-fashioned" spiral notebook. After returning home, I would make it one of my first priorities to enter my journal into my computer and enjoy re-tracing our experiences. We would upload pictures from places visited and paste them in the day of the journal when the event occurred. You will notice that from trip to trip, your journal will become more of a habit to do. Also, it really helped in planning for the next backpacking trip. Notes were kept as to things we didn't get to do that we would really want to do "the next time"; places to revisit; our favorite restaurants or our favorite local food items, etc.

You will not regret the time you spend in keeping an accurate journal. You will get to relive and share your wonderful experiences with family, friends or just for you own pleasure, for the rest of your life.

Helpful Hints For Finding Good Travel Deals

It can be difficult booking travel plans for your vacation or trip. There are numerous resources available, and it can sometimes feel like it's hard to know where to start. Use the tips you're about to read to make booking your travel plans much easier as you find the right deals for your needs.

In today's world, a great place to start is by searching online travel agents. Whatever is available in person is available online plus more. So, it's a good idea to start online, searching out deals, looking at promotions and discounts, visiting different sites, and looking at all of your options. Make sure you pay attention to different types of packages and do your calculations. You need to have a good idea of what you're going to bring for your trip, and what you're going to need.

Make sure you're looking at package deals. Today's travel industry packages everything, and you can find great deals for flights, hotels, food, and more all in the same package for one low price. It can save you much money if you're able to find the right deal. You will already have an idea of what you need, so this will tell you what kind of package you're looking for.

When you see the words all-inclusive, that's exactly what it means. Booking all-inclusive travel is a great way to travel hassle free. You don't have to worry about any accommodations this way. However, make sure you're getting the deal you want because there are two kinds of this type of travel. First, there is the luxury kind, and then there is the economically priced kind.

Once you do find a good deal, you need to familiarize yourself with the company that is offering it. Look at reviews of the company, and just see more of what the company is about. You want to feel comfortable, and you want to see a site that is professional and that makes you feel like you're in good hands.

Go to travel websites too to see what you can find. Sometimes just searching travel agents won't necessarily give you all of the information you need. By searching travel websites regarding your destination, you can often find out much more information as well.

Make sure you're looking at hotel reviews online too, so when you do book your package deal, you're happy with that specific one. You want the right accommodations, so you have to make sure you're booking the right ones.

You can find the best deals sometimes on auction sites. Check out the various online auction sites, and see if the travel arrangements you need are up for grabs. Since auction sites are subjective to bidding, you can find some excellent deals and packages.

Use the tips you've read here to find the best deals for travel, and make booking those deals much easier and less stressful. It's not hard to find the right deals, but you have to know where to look.

Tips For Vacationing on a Budget

Looking for some vacation money saving ideas? There's nothing wrong with vacationing on a budget. Hey, we all can't travel like the rich and famous.

You save all year to get the money for a well earned vacation. You want to stretch your vacation budget but still enjoy yourself. Sounds like a good plan. To help you out I've put together some vacation money saving ideas that I hope you will find useful.

If you have a particular destination in mind it pays to plan ahead. Research the attractions and facilities. Find out what specials or discounts they may have going. Look for other things to do or see nearby so that you can make good use of your time and cut down on the running from place to place.

Plan your vacation for the off season. You can usually get better deals on lots of things like plane tickets, hotels, car rentals, cruises and lots of other things.

If you have friends or relatives nearby your destination consider asking them if you can stay with them. Don't be a freeloader though. Even though you help pay for the groceries and other expenses your host incurs, it's still a good vacation money saving idea.

If you are flying try to plan your trip for when tickets are traditionally cheapest. That would be Feb through May and September through December (except the week before Thanksgiving and the two week period before Christmas). Try to avoid flying on Friday afternoons as this is often the busiest time of the week for airlines.

Meals can be expensive at restaurants so you can save some money by packing food for the road.

When eating out try to avoid the places that obviously cater to tourists. Find out where the locals eat. Ask around. The smaller family owned places usually have better food at better prices. You may have to go a little out of your way but it is usually worth it for some vacation money savings.

Hotels are typically more expensive the closer you get to a major attraction. With a little planning you can find a good balance between price and distance.

When picking hotels don't just go by the ratings. Compare the amenities they offer. Often you will find that you really don't need everything offered by that 4 star hotel and you can do very nicely at the 3 star...with a better price!

Consider buying or renting an RV. You travel at your own pace. Cooking and bathrooms are always close by. You can meet a lot of other friendly RVers who will usually be glad to point out the best places to go.

When traveling by car you can save fuel by renting a smaller fuel efficient model. Packing light, reducing your speed and maintaining proper tire air pressure will also cut the gas costs.

Make sure that your car is ready for the trip. Good tires, oil change, tune-up and all that good stuff. It's a heck of a lot cheaper and more convenient to deal with these things before you go rather than on the road somewhere.

Check out the local transportation system of buses, trains or trolleys. These can be considerably cheaper than using taxis.

Camping is a great vacation money saving idea. There are lots of campgrounds around. They are cheap and you may end up with an experience that outshines anything you can get a fancy hotel.

Plan activities that don't require a lot of money. Hiking, and swimming are good ones. Local Museums and historical sites are often very reasonably priced as well as being quite educational and fun. The big theme parks have their appeal but you can really go through the cash at those places.

Plan picnics. These can be excellent vacation money saving opportunities as well as a chance to really relax and enjoy the local area.

Avoid buying souvenirs. It's easy to get caught up and blow a bundle on these overpriced goodies. Set some mental rules ahead of time about how much you will spend on souvenirs and it will be easier to stick to it when the time comes.

I hope that you find some of these vacation money saving ideas helpful. Make a plan and stick to it. There's no reason why you can't have a great vacation without emptying the bank account.

The Best Way To Travel Around With Your Loved One

One of the best ways to have an affordable vacation is staying within the borders of the United States on a road trip! Not only does this save you the hassle of dealing with flight regulations, but you can go at your own pace and take turns driving. Road trips are great for groups of friends or families. Whether you would like to visit one or two states or go cross country, you are sure to save money by following some of the tips listed in this article.

It is very important that you plan where you would like to go before you start driving. If you want to be somewhat spontaneous, you should at least have a basic outline of which cities you would like to hit during the road trip so you do not waste time or money driving around aimlessly. Look up some travel sites for the areas that you will be going to for some great ideas. Some activities are free and still worth doing, like hiking in national parks or visiting historic sites and factories. You can make your trip educational and fun without spending too much money.

Bringing your own snacks is one of the best tips when it comes to taking a road trip, because it can be very expensive to keep stopping at roadside restaurants. For breakfast, try having some granola or fruit and bread products like muffins. Snacks for on the road should include fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese and crackers, or other portable foods that everyone (including the driver) can enjoy during the long hauls on the trip.

Make sure that you get deals on places you stay instead of staying at super expensive hotels. Money that could be spent on souvenirs or admission to events should not have to be sacrificed for a hotel room that costs $200 a night! If you have a large enough car, you can sleep in the car sometimes while taking turns driving. Another way to save money on lodging is to go camping while you are on the road trip! Bringing some sleeping bags and sleeping under the stars is a great way to experience nature while saving money on lodging. If possible, stay with family or friends that live out of state so you can visit loved ones and save some cash!

If you want to make the most of your trip, try going when the areas you would like to visit are not swarming with other tourists. Although most people have vacation around the same time, save yourself from the annoying crowds and exorbitant rates for travel fees by going before or after the peak season.

Going on a road trip can be one of the most fun experiences you have with friends or family. This gives you an opportunity to travel without spending too much money! Remember the tips in this article and you can have a fun vacation without even leaving the United States behind.

Postcards From Columbia

An auspicious beginning, the border crossing was painless. I left the Ecuadorian border town, Tulcan, early Sunday morning by minibus, covering the few remaining kilometers to the border. A naturally defined border, a bridge traverses an Andean river overlooking lush surroundings. The Ecuadorian side had no immigration line, so with a quick passport stamp I nonchalantly crossed the bridge to Columbia. Effortlessly I received my entrance passport stamp, quickly exchanged money, and began my journey into Columbia.

In Ecuador, the massive Andean mountain range forms a singular spinal column up the country's midsection. Upon reaching Columbia, the Andes splits into three separate mountain ranges. The tumultuous division is dramatically illustrated along the road to Popayan, a colonial city some 200 hundred miles north of the Ecuadorian border.

The journey's first phase is defined by verdant mountainous terrain and chilled air. As the range begins to formulate its divergences, wider, deeper valleys emerge as the road begins its descent. Soon, deep valleys transform into dramatic, plummeting gorges, the landscape now barren and desert-like. Villagers set up modest restaurants to serve passing travelers, their worn structures perched precariously on the mountainside edge.

The road continues weaving downward to a river crossing, suddenly rising precipitously back upward, then downward again, continuing this rollercoaster ride for many more miles as buses and trucks steadily strain their gears.

I must have dozed off during this rollercoaster ride for I soon awoke to discover a sharply contrasting tropical scene outside my window, tall jungle growth encroaching the edges of the pavement. Here's where the journey gets interesting.

As the bus approached a small village a roadblock obstructed our advancement. A half-dozen men dressed in guerrilla camouflage fatigues waved our bus to a full stop. They identified themselves as members of the guerrilla group FURC, a benign offshoot of the more notorious group FARC. They were looking for people to volunteer themselves as hostages. I was the only foreigner on board. Seeing my hesitation they quickly announced that tonight back at the guerrilla camp they were having an outdoor showing of classic Laurel and Hardy movies, popcorn included. The enticement worked.... I volunteered.

A covered truck was waiting for us. To keep their whereabouts secret, I allowed the men to blindfold me. The journey seemed an eternity, bouncing around in the back of their truck. Finally we stopped and my blindfold was removed. Squinting, my eyes slowly adjusted to the dim jungle light. The compound was modest in size. My nostrils stung from the pungent odors of farm animals and human sweat. Fortunately, the aroma from the freshly buttered popcorn mollified the less pleasant odors.

As I started to sit down on a log to watch the movies, I saw her: caramel-colored skin, statuesque and garbed in jungle camouflage, the Columbian woman introduced herself as FURC's leader. The moment was lust at first sight. While the FURC men were preoccupied laughing and eating popcorn, we snuck into her large canvas tent and made passionate love.

The next few days flowed lazily like the tropical heat. Good Columbian espresso in the morning followed by volleyball games between the guerrillas and the hostages. The guerrillas had mistakenly taken as hostages, two champion volleyball players; one Brazilian and one Swedish. Needless to say our hostage team kicked ass!

Finally Friday arrived and although nobody in the outside world had paid my dollar hostage ransom I told the FURC members I had to get back to Ecuador. The Columbian woman reluctantly agreed. Since the group had cunningly confiscated a helicopter from a military installation many months back, they hoped to use the helicopter to haul a lavish jacuzzi from a prominent political figure's residence back to their compound, to help them entice more volunteer hostages. I told them to text me when they do.

I thought to mention that, as a possible alternative income source, they might consider getting on the ecotourism bandwagon by creating FURC tours. They pondered this new idea.

After saying our goodbyes, we jumped into the truck, where I was once again blindfolded, and then returned through the jungle to civilization.

That's one version of what happened during my Columbian visit. Now...here's another.

One of the joys and challenges to traveling is separating fact from fiction, the truth from the myth. Though far from completely safe, guerrilla encounters along the major Columbian travel routes have diminished considerably in recent years. My journey to and from Popayan went very smoothly, without incident.

The occasional bus robbery does occur, primarily at night. Are they FARC influenced or just the criminal habits of thieves and thugs. Who knows?

FARC does wield considerable influence in the outlying countryside and villages near Popayan however no tourist, from what I've heard, has been bothered. All travelers I've spoken with had not encountered any problems and were thoroughly enjoying their travels through Columbia. The usual safeguards and cautions to traveling certainly still apply, especially in the big cities.

Popayan is a very easygoing city, especially in the old town's colonial section: whitewashed buildings, wrought iron balconies, churches around every other corner. Popayan had been the seat of power several centuries ago while the region was still under Spanish rule. Power later ceded to Bogota and Popayan, probably to its benefit, has maintained backseat status ever since.

After suffering a devastating earthquake in 1983, within the last ten years Popayan has gone through a complete renovation, resurrecting itself to surpass its former glory.

My first night in Popayan I experienced a 6.8 magnitude earthquake while sitting in my hostel. The epicenter was over 150 miles away deep below the Columbian coastal surface. No damage done in Popayan, just a wild rolling sensation.

A university town, the cultural amenities in Popayan are plentiful as are the beautiful women. The cafes are plentiful as well. Their interiors speak volumes, alluding to a rich colorful history: old, dark wooden chairs and tables, hard wood floors and balconies, cracked stucco and faded cultural posters.

Sipping my espresso, I gazed toward the open door and the passing crowd. I can imagine militias and guerrillas running past, protesters marching by, workmen moving their horse-drawn work carts, and colorful villagers moving their produce on the backs of llamas. Was it yesterday or was it two, three centuries ago. Not too much has changed here in Columbia. And, what great coffee!
